Costa Rica is a small, prosperous, rainforest-covered country in Central America with coastlines along the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean and is considered one of the most advanced in Latin America. It is slightly larger than Switzerland but has only half as many inhabitants. According to a survey, the inhabitants of Costa Rica are among the happiest people in the world. The capital San José is home to various cultural institutions, including the Gold Museum with a pre-Columbian collection. The health system is one of the best in Latin America. Doctors, clinics and hospitals are available throughout the country. Costa Rica is known for its beaches, volcanoes and biodiversity. About a quarter of the country's territory consists of protected jungle areas, where numerous animals live, capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, toucans, sloths and many more live.
We work together with a very experienced local partner with whom we are in constant contact and receive regular reports. The local counselors of our partner are there for you and will help you in all matters (host family, school, etc.) The LGA team in Switzerland is always available for you and your parents during office hours - in case of emergencies also around the clock.
The school system in Spain is similar to the one in Switzerland.
You will be assigned by class, not by course. Compulsory education ends with the tenth grade. After that, the young people start working life, attend vocational courses or the two-year high school baccalaureate classes (Bachillerato) at the secondary school.
Normally you will be placed in the first year of the Bachillerato, where you have 10 - 12 subjects and about 30 lessons per week. Special for Spain are the long summer holidays between school years. Other holidays (except Easter and Christmas) are rather the exception.
If you want to improve your language skills quickly, there is the possibility to take one of the different Spanish courses besides the school: Spanish conversation, grammar and structures, survival Spanish, Latin American literature, advanced Spanish literature.
Prerequisites are good academic performance and at least two years of Spanish lessons. Students who do not meet this requirement must attend a language course in the country (at extra costs).
Spanish families are extremely cheerful, warm and hospitable. You will be immediately accepted into the large family circle. Like a normal family member, you have rights and duties. Please be open, honest and helpful and follow the house rules of your host family. In this way you will quickly get to know and love the Spanish mentality!
